Literacy India Project Report
Literacy India (LI) was established in 1996, with the objective of empowering disadvantaged children and women to help them become self-sufficient. Deeply rooted in the ‘education, empowerment and employment’ approach, Literacy India is now working across Delhi NCR, Haryana, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Literacy India has established 55 centers across India catering annually to over 10,000 children, 20,000 youth and women through core LI programs directly and 20,000 through various other outreach programs. Till date over 3,50,000 children, youth and women have benefited from the various programs. LI engages with the various communities across states of India for the following:
- Identify young boys and girls from under privileged backgrounds and help build their confidence and awareness
- Support children in an active schooling
- To nurture, mentor and assist children to become human resource assets in the community and to restore dignity amongst the underprivileged
- Use role models to inspire the youth to take up issues concerning their communities
- Provide women and youth with vocational skills
- Empower women from economically rural and slum areas by providing training and livelihood
Introduction: About the project
- Vidyapeeth project aims at encouraging children for non-formal preparatory education.
- The essence of the curriculum is to generate and sustain children's interest in education and their keenness to continue to attend school.
- Literacy India uses an experimental educational approach to capture the interest of these children through classroom contacts, excursions, and inspirational interaction with well-known personalities.
- It was found that children are coming here from poor and daily wage labour families.
- Lack of financial backup, illiteracy and lack of awareness about education prevented parents to send the children to the formal school.
- Apart from that, most of the cases it was observed that these children are the first generation learner
Project Outcome:
1. Ensure quality education for underserved children specially migrant, SC/ST and BPL families.
2. Livelihood & Skill Development Training Centers” will be developed for imparting skill development programmes Gurgoan and surrounding area.
3. Training will be provided to urban, semi urban and rural youth migrating for job in metro cities at the centres for providing sustainable employment, either self / wage employment.
